When you think of Kaiju No. 8, the first images that probably come to mind are terrifying monsters, city-shattering battles, and Kafka Hibino’s chaotic double life as both man and kaiju. But behind every epic showdown stands the backbone of humanity’s survival — the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. It’s not just a single team of soldiers with some cool type of guns; it’s an entire military structure divided into multiple divisions, each with their own roles, territories, and specialties. In Kaiju no. 8 universe, there are total 16 division in Japan. Think of them like branches of an army, some are made for frontline assault, others for strategic defense, and a few for research and support.

So, whether you’re a new fan or a obsessed kaiju nerd, this guide breaks down every known Defense Force Division, their leaders, and their roles in protecting Japan from extinction.

1st Division

  • Captain: Gen Narumi
  • Specialty: All-round combat and rapid deployment.

The 1st Division is essentially the elite strike force of the Defense Force. They’re trained to handle high-level kaiju combat without hesitation. What makes them stand out is their versatility — whether it’s urban defense, direct extermination, or supporting other divisions, they’re built to adapt.

Captain Gen Narumi sets the tone with his playful yet ruthless personality. He may come off as an airhead who’s glued to his gaming console, but once the suit is on, Narumi is one of the most lethal kaiju hunters alive. Also every platoon leader in the 1st division has the ability to become captain or vice-captain.

2nd Division

  • Captain: Jura Igarashi
  • Specialty: Unknown.

Not too much information shown for 2nd Division. But, ten years ago the Second Division and its then Captain Hikari Shinomiya took on Kaiju No. 6. Also third divisions Aoi Kaguragi and Haruichi Izumo were transferred there to sharpen their combat skills.

3rd Division

  • Captain: Mina Ashiro
  • Specialty: Both short and long range combat.

The Third Division of the Defense Force is the most famous squad of kaiju killers, guided by Captain Mina Ashiro who is famous herself in whole Japan. While Mina in Ace in Sniping, vice captain Hoshina is nightmare for short and mid size kaiju. 3rd divisions base also serves as the recruitment training ground.

4th Division

  • Captain: Jugo Ogata
  • Specialty: Tactical command.

The 4th Division was once under the iron grip of Isao Shinomiya, the Director-General himself. Later third divisions Reno Ichikawa and Iharu Furuhashi were transferred to this division under Jugo Ogata to master their combat skills.

5th to 16th division

While the manga hasn’t revealed everything about the 5th and beyond, they also heavily take part in maintaining Japans peace. Among them 6th divisions captain Soichiro Hoshina is Soshiro Hoshina’s brother.

How the Divisions Work Together

  • Eastern Divisions: First Division, Second Division, Third Division and Fourth Division, operating in the Chubu and Kanto regions.
  • Western Divisions: Fifth Division, Sixth Division, Seventh Division and Eighth Division, operating in the Chugoku, Kansai and Shikoku regions.
  • Northern Divisions: Ninth Division, Tenth Division, Eleventh Division and Twelfth Division, operating in the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions.

The Defense Force divisions are more than just background military groups, they’re the lifeblood of the series. Each division brings something unique to the fight. Whether you admire Mina’s sniper precision, Hoshina’s flashy blade work, or Narumi’s unpredictable brilliance, one thing’s clear: without the Defense Force divisions, Japan wouldn’t stand a chance against kaiju.
